woke up to a bit of snow at the house... got too excited about it, so after church I drove up to the mtns
went out to get the paper the other day and saw this early morning view from my driveway... it's the overnight result of "freezing fog"! I did my best to snag a decent photo of it.
so I got out yesterday for a nice MTB ride. it was in the low 30's all day but, after riding & running in 26 degrees and "freezing fog" (yea, that was a new one for me too!) the past couple days, 32 suddenly felt quite mild. seriously. it was wild. I guess I'm back to my PA winter standards for weather!
I think I'll be raising my saddle a touch. what do you guys think?
yep, winter training is all about LSD... long, slow, distance. just easy base miles to lay a solid foundation for the rest of the year and build a good aerobic base. that's why today I went out and rode nice and easy. no, I didn't end up above the snow line. no, I didn't end up trying to run through 6 crusty inches of snow, because I couldn't ride through it anymore. and no this didn't slow me down at all and make me late. so I didn't hustle at all up there. and so of course I stuck to the program like a good cyclist and just put in easy base miles. since I wasn't late, I didn't even draft a semi back across town spinning out my biggest gear with my HR at 207. noooo... that would just be silly! nope, not me, just sticking to the program.
perhaps the best one yet, so funny...YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.: "Back Dorm Boys - As Long As You Love Me"
so in what must be "send John a funny video week" (see the earlier BSB post) my good friend Josh sent me this one:
aw man, today's ride got a little out of control. I think I did about 20 miles on dirt roads in the middle of nowhere. I went over 90min only seeing 1 car. it got a little scary... definitely some lonely miles out here! it got a little hard too... well soft depending on how you look at it. just as the road turned back into a super stiff headwind, it also softened up so that I was riding on a somewhat sandy surface. how convenient! nothing like headwinds and sand to slow you down.
This was from the drive out of Oregon Saturday... time for some warm weather riding!
Mt. Bachelor has over 20 inches now and is expecting another foot tomorrow. they're going to open on the 18th (since they're expecting a couple more feet by then)!
Yep, that's just about as ugly as it gets. pretty much the hardest weather to ride in... So yea, looks like another night on the rollers :-(
so the reality of being Mr. Mom has set in since Mandy went back to work today. Travis and I made the most of it and hiked up Pilot Butte. round trip, it's a full 1.5 hours from the house and a decent 500 ft climb. today was in the low 40's so I kept Travis tight and warm... too warm almost, I was definitely sweating on the way up!
the other reality setting in is that sunset was at 4:55pm today! ouch! considering it only gets worse until Dec 22, I definitely have some adjusting to do. so after Travis went to bed I hopped on the rollers for an hour... just to get in the habit... I think there'll be a lot of that this winter!
oh yea, I found the "Slalom Play Loop" today! unbelievable! despite the cool temps and the sky threatening to rain, the riding around here just keeps getting better. I had no choice but to lower my seat and get it on BMX style... too much fun. then I rolled home on a dirt road and some singletrack. mucho fun. fun, easy base miles. not bad for the first training day of the 2006 season.
I put together a nice panoramic photo of some of the mountains around here. you have to look at it a bit bigger to really see it well though. just click on the photo above, then click "All Sizes" above the photo and pick the size you'd like to view or download.
good motivation for me to lose the off-season weight I've put on!
